Setting Up Your Newsgroup Program

GulfTel is pleased to be able to offer our dial-up and Broadband customers free access to USENET, a worldwide community containing thousands of discussion groups on nearly every topic.

If this is the first time you have used USENET newsgroups, you may want to take a look at our
Introduction to USENET page.

The quickest way to get started reading and posting to newsgroups is to use our web-based newsreader program located at http://newsguy.com/news.htm. Or, if you prefer, there are a number of programs will allow you to read and post to newsgroups. Among the more popular newsreaders are Outlook Express, Netscape, Free Agent, and Opera. (GulfTel offers customer support for Outlook Express only.)

Whichever program you choose, you'll need the following pieces of information:

  • your GulfTel username
  • your GulfTel password
  • the name of the GulfTel NNTP (news) server (news.gulftel.com)

For your convenience, we have provided step-by-step directions for configuring several newsreader programs:
